Thompson Won't Offer False Tax Promises

I’m heartened to finally hear somebody on the Republican side talking about fiscal responsibility and not talking about tax cuts as the only sound economic policy.

New York Post:

August 18, 2007 — DES MOINES, Iowa – Fred Thompson wandered very close to getting into the 2008 presidential race yesterday in his first foray here – riding a wave of political celebrity but carefully skirting the pitfalls of specifics.

The former senator from Tennessee, who is expected to enter the race next month, wants to be the conservative alternative to Rudy Giuliani but refused repeated requests yesterday to rule out raising taxes.

“We are in the process of gradually bankrupting future generations in this country,” Thompson said of Social Security and other entitlement programs that will plunge the federal government deeply into debt over the next decade.

Pundits expect Thompson to announce his candidacy sometime next month.

  • Spirit of ’76

Too bad his pathetic record in Washington shows that he doesn’t mean it.

  • Kevin Houston

So don’t expect taxes to really go down either. More war, more welfare, more of the same, until they drive the whole lot over the monetary cliff.
