Republicans Brace For Larry Craig Fallout

Found part of this quote over at Political Wire, and boy does it speak to the multiple credibility problems Republicans are facing in the upcoming election…

“The real question for Republicans in Washington is how low can you go, because we are approaching a level of ridiculousness. You can’t make this stuff up. And the impact this is having on the grass-roots around the country is devastating. Republicans think the governing class in Washington are a bunch of buffoons who have total disregard for the principles of the party, the law of the land and the future of the country.”

The quote is from GOP strategist Scott Reed, and here’s more from the NY Times:

Some Republicans are indeed screaming, particularly the party’s social conservative wing, which places a high priority on ethics and family values. Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, a conservative advocacy group in Washington, said the elections of November 2006, in which Republicans lost control of the House and the Senate, proved that voters want politicians in Washington to clean up their act.

“Exit polls show that was the No. 1 factor in depressing Republican enthusiasm,” Mr. Perkins said in an interview Tuesday. “There is an expectation that leaders who espouse family values will live by those values. And while the values voters don’t demand perfection, I do believe they want leaders with integrity.”

The perception that Mr. Craig is not living up to his own values is causing problems for him, and after his appearance on Tuesday, with his wife standing by his side, some Republicans confessed they did not know what to think.

“He sounded almost as convincing as, ‘I did not have sex with that woman,’ ” said Gary Bauer, a Christian conservative and onetime Republican presidential candidate, reprising President Bill Clinton’s remark initially denying involvement with Monica S. Lewinsky.

And so it goes…

I have declared my blog to be a “No Larry Craig” zone.

“Some Republicans are indeed screaming, particularly the party’s social conservative wing, which places a high priority on ethics and family values.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the Republican party supposed to stand for “ethics and family values?” It’s understandable to give the GOP a break when a single member gets caught with his pants down, however, isn’t this what the Republican party flogged Clinton for? Using the trappings of his office to engage in lascivious sexual acts while on the peoples’ dollar?

This isn’t an isolated case where one Republican strayed from his “ethical” foundation that is “hallmark” of the Republican party. There was the Spokane, Washington Republican Senator who solicited sex with a young gay man, also offering him a job. There were more serious allegations of having molested two young boys more than 20 years beforehand which he denied.

There was Mark Foley, the Republican Congressman from Florida. Accused of having improper contact with pages working on the Senate floor.

And then…Republican Congressman, Jim Kolbe of Arizona accused of having improper conduct with at least two teenagers, a 16-year old page and a recently graduated page. One participant, said of Congressman Kolbe that he was uncomfortable with the attention Kolbe paid to one of the former pages. He was “creeped out by it,” he said, adding that there was a lot of “fawning, petting and touching” on the teenager’s arms, shoulders and back by Kolbe.

And now there is Craig. The Republicans are by no means alone, the democrats have committed the very same types of acts. The reason I bring up the Republicans is because of the irony. This is the party that wished to legislate your morality and “family values.” These are are the same men are are zealously anti-gay–passing anti-homosexual legislation all the while they are out soliciting gay sex and trying to doink little boys (and big ones too.) There’s an image problem here. For a party that touts its self as the morally “superior” party, the actions of its members run counter to that claim.

Republicans are pro-life, yet they are the biggest advocates of war, which undeniably kills thousands and thousands of innocent woman and children. Republicans are supposedly anti-homosexuality, yet they are caught soliciting gay sex. The level of hypocrisy is overwhelming.

Craig was using the trappings of the mens crapper while on the people’s toilet. Not only hypocrasy, but disgusting and unsanitary as well.
