Lieberman Backs Bush's "Appeasement" Statements

Lieberman Backs Bush's "Appeasement" Statements

Here’s the transcript from MSNBC via ThinkProgress:

“President Bush got it exactly right today when he warned about the threat of Iran and its terrorist proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah. It is imperative that we reject the flawed and naïve thinking that denies or dismisses the words of extremists and terrorists when they shout “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” and that holds that — if only we were to sit down and negotiate with these killers — they would cease to threaten us. It is critical to our national security that our commander-in-chief is able to distinguish between America’s friends and America’s enemies, and not confuse the two.”

So I guess North Korea and Libya don’t count, right?

Listen, the only people confusing America’s friends and America’s enemies is Bush, Lieberman and anybody else who suggest that diplomacy is appeasement. It’s not. And it’s been shown that when we go it alone on specious evidence, our ability to have leverage to strike an imminent threat is obviously lessened.

And again…do North Korean and Libya count?

To that point, watch Pat Buchanan make the point for me…it’s towards the back.

My question: will McCain back these statements? After all, Lieberman is his “left” hand man.

More as it develops…

Honest question: is it inappropriate to assume that Leiberman’s hawkish middle eastern position is related to his Jewishness? I am proudly liberal, and very sympathetic to the Isreali struggles and the historic struggles of the Jewish people. But I have a funny feeling in my gut whenever I hear Leiberman talk about middleastern policy. This is an old question that I think we’re not allowed to ask anymore, but…is he American first or Isreali first? Please tell me if this suspicion is justified or if it has some anti-semetic roots, and I’m just in denial. I swear I’m not an anti-semite – I be suspicious of anyone with such close ties to another country. Right?

  • Lit3Bolt

SHHHHHHHHHHH! Mike, you’re slipping dangerously close to the truth.

Leiberman is basically a double agent at the highest levels of the US government. Israel does everything it can to manipulate and blackmail the most powerful country in the world into carry water for it, even when it is not in our best interests. But US interests don’t matter, Israeli interests do. And if you disagree or are suspicious, you’re a Nazi.

So quiet your Nazi suspicions, Mike! We won’t have that kind of talk here. Israel is a staunch ally of the US, who does nothing for us and simply sucks on us like a contented tick, bloated and happy with military munitions and technology we have showered upon them. There’s no religious extremists or fanatics in Israel, no sir! That’s all Hamas and Hezbolla and Iran.

Yeah, Lieberman’s religion has sort of been the elephant in the room whenever he talks about military action in the middle east for the past few years. It might just be a coincidence, but with the lengths Lieberman has gone to to stick by this war and drum up support for a strike against Iran, I’m skeptical to say the least.

I’m sympathetic toward Israel and was really happy to see the wave of suicide bombings in Israel cease after we took out Saddam, but it just wasn’t worth the cost we’ve paid in treasure, American and Iraqi lives, international reputation, and national security.

You have a good point about North Korea. How has that appeasement been working out so far?

I suppose being an indirect threat with a severe humanitarian crisis complicates things, but so does the entire world calling for more appeasement. Also, I think its more like, “stop doing what you are doing or we will punish you” type of negotiations with Libya’s disarmament.

  • TerenceC

Lieberman and his wife are Israelis first and foremost……followed closely by pro-war conservative, and then Zionist……….and never forget that – no matter what you hear.

  • Musical Blur

I’m very hopeful that this backfires on Bush/McCain in a big way. It’s just so obviously BS, and incredibly inappropriate.

This is just one of the most disasterous Presidents of all time doing what he does. It’s just W being W.

Virtually everyone in the country can’t wait until this guy leaves so we don’t have to hear anymore of this lying, fight-picking, functionally-retarded-cowboy routine.
