Obama Proposes Interesting Student Aid Plan

Here’s and interesting initiative proposed by Barack Obama.

He wants to give students a $4,000 tax credit to be used towards tuition – but there’s a catch. To earn the credit, the students would have to complete 100 hours of community service.

Plus, since it’s a tax credit (rather than a plain ole handout), students will have to be working and paying taxes in order to benefit. Thus the initiative will directly influence those students who are most in need of assistance, such as those with families who are returning to school or those without parental or spousal resources on which to draw.

Although the details of the plan aren’t available (i.e. what qualifies as community service), this sounds like the kind of smart initiative that balances federally provided opportunity with personal responsibility.

If he keeps coming up with such reasonable pragmatic ideas, I may be forced to vote for him.

Community service in exchange for help with tuition… The community gets some work done, and students get a chance to work for what they want, which will hopefully teach them thrift and responsibility and motivate them to study harder because it’s their work that’s paying for their schooling. I like it.

Interesting reworking of Edwards’ plan, which asks college students to work a certain number of hours a week at a regular job in exchange for tuition credit. I heard it’s been successful in a pilot program in NC.

As a former Edwards supporter, I’m glad to see Obama adopting one of his better ideas.
