Bill Clinton May Make Concessions to Help Hillary Get State Job

The will-she-or-won’t-she questions surrounding Hillary Clinton and the State Department took yet another turn this morning. Seems like Bill Clinton is willing to make some concessions to help his wife land the job:

Clinton has agreed to release the names of several major donors to his charitable foundation and will submit future foundation activities and paid speeches to a strict ethics review, said Democrats knowledgeable about the discussions.

They also said that Clinton would step away from day-to-day responsibility for his foundation while his wife serves and would alert the State Department any new sources of income and to his speechmaking. The Democrats spoke only on grounds of anonymity because of the private nature of the Cabinet-selection process.

If true, this development would seem to indicate Hillary Clinton wants the job, despite rumors to the contrary.

This has all devolved quickly into political theater, which is what you get whenever the Clintons are involved. I’m no longer even sure if Senator Clinton’s qualifications have anything to do with the possible State job. Is this just payback for her being a tireless Barack Obama booster and making sure her supporters didn’t bolt to John McCain? Is this just a way for Obama to kick Bill Clinton off the world stage (and a way for Hillary to finally get back at Bill by overtaking him in importance on the world stage)? Does this have anything to do with “change” or is this Chicago-style politics being played on the national stage?

In my mind, Senator Clinton’s qualifications for Secretary of State are quite average. Yes, she has traveled the globe and can leverage existing relationships with world leaders, but we have no proof that she’s exceptionally gifted in foreign policy or a particularly skilled diplomat. It’s like picking up a track star to play football. Sure, we know he can run, but can he catch too?

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

An alternate hypothesis is that this means she’s not going to take the job, and so Bill is saying this now so that he won’t be blamed after she doesn’t get the job.

My guess is that the driving force on this has been the desire to farm out the leader of the DLC faction…to the state department. Sos is a prestigious spot, but still one where you serve at the President’s discretion, and one where HC would have no impact on legislation. And let’s face it, being SoS given the problems in the middle east is as thankless a job as referee at a peewee soccer game.

I think HC did a very good job representing a tough democratic approach to foreign policy while running for President. But it’s just not her raison d’etre. She’s a domestic policy wonk.

Before Hillary Clinton can become Secretary of State:

    1) Bill Clinton must provide a complete listing of all donors to his foundation and presidential library.

    2) Both Bill and Hillary Clinton need to clearly indicate that any and all private financial dealings and other interactions with foreign leaders are now over, unless specifically authorized by the US government.

    3) Hillary Clinton needs to publically discuss exactly what her approach to the job of Secretary of State would be and clearly indicate how she would be able to perform that job without any conflict of interest whatsoever.

If Bill and Hillary Clinton are unwilling or unable to comply with the above requirements or similar ones provided by the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton should not become Secretary of State. The ball is in the Clinton’s court.

Anyone else here ready for a ban on the phrase Chicago-style politics every time someone who lived in, went to school in, or served politically in the same state as Chicago is under discussion?

Excellent analogy with the track star. But I think it’s worse than that, it’s more like picking not the sprinter, but the marathon runner to return kicks. He would just be the wrong guy for the job:

What will the Clinton’s not do to stay in power. Bill had a failed Presidency, is a liar, and a sexual addict. The real idiots are the ones who pay him $400,000 to hear what he has to say. And Hillary….well she is not much better. She is a proven liar and a criminal.
