Obama Shoots Down Mileage Tax Idea

The moment I heard this idea it sounded like box office poison, and it looks like the administration did too. Because not only does it mean you’d have to have some sort of Orwellian GPS system attached to every car, but it completely negates the benefits of higher mileage hybrids that are in the pipeline.

From Fox News:

Secretary Ray LaHood floated the idea in an interview with The Associated Press.

Gasoline taxes for nearly half a century have paid for the federal share of highway and bridge construction, but LaHood said they can no longer be counted on to raise enough money to keep the nation’s transportation system moving.

“We should look at the vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled,” the former Illinois Republican lawmaker said.

Asked about the claim, transportation department spokeswoman Lori Irving immediately shot it down.

“The policy of taxing motorists based on how many miles they have traveled is not and will not be Obama administration policy,” she said.

My question: why did the conservative LaHood propose it? Was he talking out of turn? Did he really think this was a good idea?

I’m confused…

The reason LaHood suggested this is because the Republican Party is no longer the conservative party. Their claim of conservatism is a farce, they abandoned the cause long ago. Since Reagan they have become the party big-corporations, big-government, warmongers, secrecy, and the military-industrial complex. In a word, they have become the Fascist Party. They use fear, religion, and false accusations of unamericanism or that old American fear: communism. They get their constituents so worked up over abortion, and gay marriage that they don’t notice their rights gradually being taken away, as long as they think God’s will is being followed, they are happy. Devices such as these are an Orwellian wet-dream for them, to have more power and surveillance of the people, to shred the constitution and create a more totalitarian government, and of course, for them to make more money.

and can drudge stop trying to scare people with it by somehow associating it with obama?

At some point something like this is going to be required or once we convert to electric cars (obviously a ways off) we will have to find a replacement for the gasoline tax.
