Sonia Sotomayor Who?

Have you noticed how little you’ve heard about Sonia Sotomayor lately?

The reason is pretty simple, there are bigger fish for the Republicans to fry. Replacing a liberal justice with a liberal justice on the SCOTUS isn’t a huge deal at the end of the day and they have to save their strength to work on health care reform.

Also, just like the rest of us, Republicans are poll watching and all signs don’t favor a fight.

Plus, Michael Jackson died. I think we can all agree that it’s more important right now to see who shows up for that funeral than who sits on our high court.

Seriously though, the GOP can’t stop this nomination. They can’t. They have no shot. The best they can do is look serious, fair, and principled during coverage of her inevitable confirmation.

So any serious sniping will be left to armchair qbs like Rush and Newt and opportunists looking to be the rightmost viable 2012 candidate.

Another overturned decision for Judge Sotomayor today. Guess you’re not supposed to make race-based decisions–we needed the Supreme Court to tell us this?

But like the OP said, this nomination isn’t going to change the basic makeup of the court. While this latest reversal will get some play (and may a bit with some of the new documentation that’s going to be reviewed), it’s going to fall squarely in the category of political theater. The GOP now just has a little more wiggle room to appear more aggressive during the ritual posturing.
