Pat Robertson’s Outrageous Haiti Claim And The Way Forward For The Religious Right

First, take a look at the video…

Listen, I hate to beat up on Pat, especially since he’s not sounding too good these days, but this is more for those folks like Christy (his co-host in the video) than anybody else. Because this kind of nonsense needs to go away once Robertson’s generation passes. Otherwise, you will not be taken seriously.

I’m not saying Christians need to stop believing in evil, the Devil, etc. But this folklore is silly and the more the next generation of the devout focus less on it and more on helping those in need, the better.

I’m not saying Christians need to stop believing in evil, the Devil, etc

    I’ll say it.

First let me say that Robertson is an idiot. I am a Christian and many of my Christian and non-Christian friends alike are wanting Robertson to just shut up and go away.

However, here is my question to you and please don’t take this an an attack. Why is it that when someone like Robertson gets on the air and says something stupid like this, people use it as a tool to speak to other Christians and pretty much tell them that they need to do “xyz” in order to giver a better perception of Christianity? However, when a Muslim, ect, gets on TV and says some outlandish things, the first things out of people’s mouths is that “Oh, this is just a extremist view of Islam and Islam is a religion of peace”.

People don’t think that Robertson’s view is “extremist”? How many people other than Robertson have said the same thing? Not to defend Christy, but I am sure she was shocked to hear him say that, much like Mike Meyers was shocked when Kanye said, “Bush hates black people”.

The overwhelming majority of Christian DO help those in need and don’t focus on “folklore” regarding stories like that.

Thanks for the chance to speak and keep up the good work on your site.

When I look at Hitler. Stalin.

When I look Darcy. Mass Murderers.

I believe in evil. I believe we must always be vigilant and resourceful or else we have men with white sheets roaming the country side.

    We have Hate crimes.

    I believe in evil.

It amazes me the number of people out on the web today defending Pat Robertson’s words (and some even throwing in New Orleans for good measure). There will always be morons saying stupid things and I just hope that it reduces support he gets from others for his organization.

Justin, I think you are right to target generational evolution as the best hope for the tempering of zealous perspectives like Robertson’s.

DKC, thanks for reminding those who need the reminder that the mainstream of christianity is really regla folks. Neither Christianity nor Islam is well-served by its zealots. Hopefully, both Christianity and Islam can find ways to encourage that kind of stuff to wither.

Justin: You hate to beat up Pat? Seriously? I’d like to beat up Pat with a baseball bat. He’s an ignorant pri*…

And DKC: Given the chance, I would gleefully put a bullet in every Taliban head.

All flavors of religious extremists make me mad.

I don’t understand how he can get away with saying things like that, when any other public figure would be ripped to shreds…?

He’s on my list of people that the world will be better off without. I know justin loves it when i say that.

Doomed – believing in evil has nothing to do with thinking the entire country of haiti signed a pact with the devil.

danny glover has joined robertson in the dumbass corner — i don’t believe either one can even spell “plate tectonics”

I was angry last night, perhaps a bit hyperbolic. Gladly might be a better word.

Read The Swallows of Kabul, maybe you’ll join me in murdering Taliban – we can sing show tunes.
