It’s PHIT time at the Shubin! The Philly Improv Theater, Philadelphia’s premier source for long-form improv comedy, is smack dab in the middle of their two week run of shows at The Shubin Theater. PHIT is at the forefront of the city’s exploding comedy scene and they have been producing high quality comedy shows in the city for several years. These shows display the best improv, sketch, and alternative stand-up that the city has to offer. Here’s what you can see over this weekend, courtesy of PHIT.
Friday, May 28
8:00pm-Epsilon Faction & Friends – Two different improv groups for the price of one! PHIT kindly provides performance opportunities for local improv groups that are not directly affiliated with the theater. Most importantly, the show is priced just right at $10. What a steal!
9:30pm-King Friday – King Friday got their start at last year’s Fringe Festival, performing Del Close’s show “3 Mad Rituals.” They were so good that they were made an official PHIT house team soon after. King Friday always bring the funny and create hilariously fast-paced shows.
Saturday, May 29
9:30pm-Activity Book & Friends – Activity Book is another PHIT house team hot off a great opening for UCB powerhouse Adsit & Gausas on their recent trip to Philadelphia. Activity Book is a fun, diverse group who are not afraid to inject some strange into their improv. They will also be performing with another group TBA. And all of this is still only $10!
11:00pm-Improv Jam: Flying Leap – Have you ever thought about giving improv a try but for whatever reason you never took the plunge? Well, now’s your chance! Just show up, jump on stage, and join in with improvisers of all levels. It is a very supportive atmosphere and it is FREE! The best price of all!
Sunday, May 30
6:00pm-Graduation Show: Amie Roe’s Improv Level 3 – Along with hosting performances, PHIT also offers classes in longform improv. Every level 3 class gets their chance to perform on PHIT’s stage to show off their newly acquired comedic skills! Check this one out if you want to see the potential comedy monsters of the future! And again, this is a FREE SHOW!
The Shubin is an intimate theater located at 407 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147, just a block south of South Street. Street parking can be sparse on the weekends but there is a parking lot just a few doors down from the theater. Tickets are available at the door but you can also pre-order tickets on PHIT’s website. All shows are BYOB so feel free to bring a six-pack or flagon of mead. Start your Memorial Day weekend off right with some great laughs! Also, keep your eyes peeled for PHIT shows coming up next week!
