Philadelphia native and the Most Dapper Man in Comedy Paul F. Tompkins is coming home on Saturday, August 14th! Tompkins has pioneered a new way to book gigs which he has aptly titled the Tompkins 300. In the not so distant past, a fan contacted Mr. Paul F. to perform in Toronto. Tompkins laid down the gauntlet: if the fan could get 300 fans who would be dedicated to see the show, he would book it. Almost instantly, a Facebook group was created and filled with 300 ravenous Tompkinites, and the rest, they say, is history. Tompkins 300 groups have sprung up all over the country, clambering for Tompkins to grace the stage in their fine cities (check out this cool map of all the cities!) . The Tompkins 300 is a great system for both performer and audience: Paul gets to perform for an excited crowd of his fans and avoids the sometimes sketchy crowds of the standard comedy clubs AND the audience is treated to a fine show in a legitimate theater. It’s a win-win! So now it’s our turn, Philadelphia, to revel in the glory that is Paul F. Tompkins!
So you are saying to yourself, “Where have I seen this guy before? What are his credentials?” Oh, I don’t know. Ever hear of a little program called Mr. Show, the hilarious HBO sketch show on which Tompkins both wrote and performed? Ever hear of Best Week Ever, the VH1 pop culture round-up on which Tompkins was both panelist and host? Ever hear of Comedy Death Ray Radio, the funniest thing on the Internet since it was invented by Al Gore, where Tompkins makes regular amazing appearances? Ever hear of Twitter, where Tompkins is the funniest (unverified) tweeter around?   Ever hear of comedy albums, specifically the ones titled Impersonal and Freak Wharf? Guess what: also PFT. And that’s just a few of his many great credits. This is a big statement, but I am going to throw it out there: for my money, Paul F. Tompkins is the funniest stand-up comedian in the country. Don’t miss your opportunity to see him!
Paul F. Tompkins is presented courtesy of the Philly Improv Theater, Philadelphia’s best source for improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy. The show is August 14th, 7pm at the Plays & Players Theater, 1714 Delancy Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at PHIT’s website. Tickets will also be available at the door for $25 but I am sure they will be sold out well before the date, so get them now!
