At the end of this post, you will see awesomeness — Temple of the Dog, reunited on stage during Pearl Jam’s concert in Wisconsin yesterday.
In the video, we see Chris Cornell of Soundgarden join the band on stage for “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” which may be my favorite song off of the Temple of the Dog LP. They also did “Hunger Strike” and “Reach Down.”
This song has a lot of significance for me. That album came out when I was in high school, not long before the death of a kid who was in my study hall and chemistry class. His name was Kevin, and he was hit by a car while riding his bike home from practice. I don’t think they ever caught the dude.
On the way home from his wake, I was with a bunch of my high school buddies. We were stunned. In a state of shock. This was sadly the second time we’d seen one of our friends in a casket, and wouldn’t be the last.
As we drove away from the nursing home, my buddy Mike turned on the radio. The first song we hear is Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven.” He changes the channel. Bam! — Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.” He changes it again — The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” We look at each other as he switches the channel a third time, and we land on Temple of the Dog’s “Say Hello 2 Heaven.”
He left it on that song, and we sat in silence, driving down the LIE, tears running from our eyes.
