I was 15 when Stone Temple Pilots’ debut album Core first came out in 1992. I was a sophomore in high school, and loved Black Sabbath, Jane’s Addiction, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and fucking Death. I was a mixed up kid.
My buddy Matt — who is still a great friend of mine — was the first dude to get the band’s new album. He played it for me, and I quickly wrote off STP as a poor man’s Pearl Jam.
Twenty years later, STP is still alive (if barely) and kicking, and will be touring later this summer to commemorate two decades since the album’s initial release.
At this point, it’s still unknown whether STP will be playing their debit album in its entirety on the trek. I would suggest they do that, because that’s the only way they can make such a tour truly special. And honestly, at this point, if you’re an STP fan, you’ve seen these dudes live already.
We have the initial dates for the tour at the end of this post.
I will say this about STP; I saw them once. They were the surprise guests for the K-Rock Dysfunctional Family Picnic some ten years ago at Jones Beach. I was there to see Jane’s Addiction…who played right after STP’s unexpected set.
All I can remember thinking was that in 15 minutes, Stone Temple Pilots conquered that stage, raped it, and then left it in shambles. They were fucking awesome, and I felt bad for the Jane’s dudes…I didn’t know how they would be able to follow-up STP’s set.
I’m sure they’re still good live, but its been ten years. They’re probably a lot slower now than when I saw them. Shit, I’m a lot slower.
