In our ongoing series of guest columns, we’ve asked a bunch of metal’s heaviest hitters to provide us with a list of five crucial albums they think will change you — either for the better or the worse. Today, we hear from Steve Goldberg of Cephalic Carnage, and I’ve gotta admit…this list is close to perfect.
Earache Grindcrusher II Compilation
This is the album that truly changed my musical life. It introduced me to bands like Naked City, Carcass, Godflesh, Enotmbed, Napalm Death, O.L.D., Terrorizer, Morbid Angel, Spazztic Blurr! This was back when all bands sounded different and we’re all bad ass! This is my metal bible.
Mr. Bungle — Disco Volante
If I was stranded on an island and could only have one album for the rest of my life, this would be it. Each track is so different and well thought out. This band led me to the path of many great bands like Secret Chiefs 3, Estradasphere, Farmer’s Market, Orange Tulip Conspiracy, Melvins, Fantomas, and others
Human Remains — Where Were You When
A collection of everything they recorded as a band, between 1990 and 1996. The volume swells the guitars do were something new for me, and it was the first Dave Witte drumming I heard. This took me to other great bands like D.E.P., Botch, Converge, Dead Guy.
Portishead — Dummy
Probably my all time favorite band. I think I’ve heard this album more than any other. The music is so relaxing, and Beth Gibbons’ voice is to die for! Best thing to play for sleeping.
Immolation — Dawn of Possession
This is Immolation’s debut CD. Bob Vigna is the ultimate master at riffery. Every song is a classic, and all the guitar riffs are unique and brutal. Throughout their career he is able to keep coming up with riff after riff or originality and brutality. One of the all time best metal bands ever!
