Barnes & Noble Nook reader back on sale

Barnes & Noble Nook reader back on saleThe Nook e-reader, which sold out long before Christmas, is finally back on sale. Barnes & Noble says it won a tight race to get the device available again in time to capture the Valentine’s Day gift market.

The firm’s failure to either anticipate or meet demand meant only customers who ordered before Nov. 20 were guaranteed delivery in time for Christmas. (There was an offer of a $100 gift certificate if the firm missed this guarantee, though it’s not known how many certificates had to be issued, if any.)

The device is now available online again and should be in most stores in the next couple of days. Barnes & Noble has a stock checker tool on its site for those who want to check availability before setting out.

Cynics might assume the delays have been a publicity stunt aimed at giving the impression of overwhelming demand. That’s looking extremely unlikely given the time the Nook was unavailable, particularly with such a tough battle to establish the device among gift-buyers when the Amazon Kindle has sold so well.
