New job postings hint that the Kindle is readying for war with the iPad
There was no doubt after the announcement of Apple’s new iPad that it was taking square aim at Amazon’s popular Kindle e-reader. And while Amazon has had its issues with publishers since that day, one thing is fairly clear: the Kindle is not just going lay down and die.
Ever since the Jan. 27 announcement of the iPad, things have not been going too well for ecommerce giant Amazon. The company has been facing e-book pricing issues with publishers such as Macmillan and others, and that isn’t to mention the possible problems that will arise in the sale pf the actual Kindle device once the iPad is released. It does appear that Amazon may be ready to fight back against the new tablet device if some of the latest announcements from the company mean what everyone thinks they do.
Last week Amazon purchased a company named Touchco from New York that specializes in touchscreen technology. These operations will be folded into Lab146, the division of Amazon that works on the Kindle e-readers. Then comes news from The New York Times that Amazon has posted job listings for new positions dealing with color LCD screens, Wi-Fi specialists and more. These all sound like positions that could possibly be involved with the next iteration of the Kindle.
While nothing is written in stone at this time, none of this is terribly shocking, it is actually quite common fare when a new competitor enters a market. There is of course no word when we might hear about a new Kindle, and considering these posts haven’t even been filled yet, it’s hard to imagine that anything could happen in less than a year. Be that as it may, it does look like Amazon may be gearing up for war with Apple.
