Queen of England wants Internet for all
The Internet is increasingly being seen as a right rather than a luxury in many parts of the world. But in others, a Web connection is nothing more than a pipe dream, available and affordable to only the upper echelons of society. Changing this, and enabling Internet for all, is an important part of narrowing the digital divide. Even the Queen of England agrees.
As part of her annual Commonwealth Day message to all remaining members of the Commonwealth of Nations, Queen Elizabeth II spoke of the need to enable as many people as possible access to the Internet. There are obviously more important things – food, clean water, healthcare – but the need to be connected should not be dismissed.
The Queen said:
The Internet is playing an important part in helping to nurture these fledgling markets but, as yet, it still remains an unaffordable option for too many of our Commonwealth citizens. In making these advances the Commonwealth recognizes that the best form of innovation are those that unite, and help build resilient partnerships and better societies as a whole.
And here is her message in full:
While I’m not sure the Queen of England is the best person to deliver this message as she resides in the lap of luxury thanks to the benevolence of her subjects, that doesn’t dilute the message. Which is that the Internet should be available to all, no matter their location or bank balance. Whether that can actually happen remains to be seen but it is, at least, a fine aim to hold on to.
