Firefox to get account management capabilities

Firefox to get account management capabilitiesThe Mozilla Foundation, the company behind the Firefox Web browser, is taking a very serious look at how it can better help you manage your life on social networking sites.

As the number of social networking sites continues to grow, and in turn, the number of login credentials we need to remember grows with it, Mozilla is looking at a possible solutions to help users out. The Online Identity Concept Series is a new effort to help you use your Web browser to manage accounts, find new content to share, manage your data across the Web and a lot more.

Besides the fact Mozilla is behind the second biggest browser in the market, it feels there are other reasons why the browser is the perfect solution for this type of situation:

Your Web browser, as your most trusted relationship in your life online, has nearly perfect knowledge of everything you do on the Web. We envision a world where your browser will play an even more active and critical role in helping you control and shape your online experience.

To this end, Mozilla quickly followed up this initial announcement with the unveiling of a new tool for Firefox called Account Manager.  This is an Alpha release at this time, and currently only works with Facebook, Google and Yahoo, but it aims to help you log in and out of accounts quickly and easily.  The plugin will detect the site you are on and will offer up a universal user interface for doing all of these functions, as well as assisting you in signing up for a site if you don’t already belong to it.  The idea of one physical appearance for all of these options is a great idea as some sites really don’t make it obvious how to do some of these things.

Account Manager is currently in Alpha testing, which means it may be buggy, and could even crash your browser, so you may want to wait a while before trying it out.  It is nice to know it’s coming down the pike, though.
