Amazon release Kindle app for Macs
Amazon is furthering its push to make sure that you can access its Kindle e-book store from anywhere you wish, and today it has hit just about the last place it hadn’t arrived at yet: Mac desktops.
Amazon has been releasing Kindle applications for every major platform so that even if you didn’t buy an actual Kindle e-reader from the company, you could still purchase e-books from them. The other side benefit was that buying a book on one platform makes it available on every other device you own, and you can switch between them without losing your place in the book.
While applications had been released for Windows computers, Apple iPhones & iPod Touches and BlackBerry phones, somehow the Mac desktop was missing until now. In an announcement from Amazon, those running Mac OS X 10.5 can now download the application.
The new app isn’t quite finished yet, and full text search and the ability to create & edit notes and highlights will be added at a later date. The timing of this release could be pure coincidence, but it’s interesting that it comes on the heals of the iPad pre-orders starting last week, a device that is set to be a major competitor with the Kindle. Getting a reader application on to the Mac desktop was sure to be a priority for Amazon right now to make sure that its books would still be front and center for those that want to use its platform for its e-books.
What other tricks Amazon has up its sleeves to take on the iPad’s iBooks application remains to be seen, but the war between these two platforms is sure to be a heated one. You can download the app at www.amazon.com/kindleformac.
