Apple takes bite from Core 2 Duo
By Staff reporters
Whether Apple is launching a movie download service along with new iPods on September 12 or not, new iMacs have just been launched and are on sale now.
The new iMacs come in sizes of 17, 20 and a whopping 24-inches, with Australian prices starting at $1549. The Mac Minis still feature Core Duo processors, with the cheapest Mac Mini upgraded from a Core Solo to a Core Duo processor at last. But for real processing power, you’re going to want a Core 2 Duo processor, and sadly these are only available in iMacs at the moment. The MacBook and MacBook Pro haven’t as yet been upgraded to Core 2 Duo processors, but given the fact that other PC notebook manufacturers have announced and some are starting to ship Core 2 Duo equipped notebooks, it’s only a matter of time before Apple do, too – and they’ll be all the better to run OS X Leopard and Windows Vista. Let’s hope Core 2 Duo MacBooks appear before the end of the year!
In the meantime, if you’re thinking of buying a new desktop computer… it sure is hard to pass up a Mac. Sure, buying Windows XP (and then Vista) and the Parallels software package to run both Mac OS X and Windows XP (or Vista) at the same time is going to add up in price, but why not ‘natively’ run two operating systems together and have the best of both worlds?
Stay tuned for September 12 in the US which will be September 13 here. I’ll be attending the local Apple briefing to see the new products and services first hand, and there will be a post or two from the event!
