The fully electric sportscar is here at last

By Staff reporters

Tesla Motors, clearly taking its name from renowned genius Nikola Tesla, have developed a fully electric sports car.

It’s so popular that the first run of 100 cars, priced at US $100,000 each, has already sold out. The car can travel from 0 to 100 Kmph in only four seconds, thanks to the power of the rechargeable lithium ion batteries. There are far fewer parts in an electric car as there is no need for spark plugs, starter motors, radiators, water pumps and other parts that any mechanic is familiar with. And the cost of charging the car from your regular power source? Around 0.5c per kilometre. Let’s hope this car rapidly gains in popularity and many more models become available. Let’s also hope other car companies take note and emulate Tesla Motors. The more renewable and electric energies we have at our disposal, the better it will be for us all – and the planet! 1. Mr. Wizard:

I’d have an electric sports car such as the Tesla in a heartbeat if I had room for it in my budget. It would make a great commuter car that is also good for short trips of up to 350km or so (leaving a reasonable reserve charge for unexpected detours, delays, etc.)

That being said, I wonder how common theft of electricity will become if electric cars that can be charged from standard grounded electrical outlets of the sort we find on the exterior of many standalone residential dwellings (homes)?

A lot of people in colder climates routinely plug engine block heaters into long extension cords. Here in the US, 100ft long extension cords can be purchased at stores such as Wal-Mart for $20 or less.

Just as gasoline theft becomes more common during gas shortages or period of unusually high gas prices, I’d expect theft of electricity to soar as electric cars become more popular. Time to put locks on outdoor electrical outlets?
