Record audio on 2nd-gen Nano!
By Staff reporters
Despite reports that the 2nd-generation iPod Nano can’t record audio, it turns out that indeed… it can with a microphone attachment designed for the 5G iPod Video.
A report at iLounge indicates that the new microphones for 5G iPods work with new firmware in 2nd-gen Nano’s. Belkin and ExtremeMac’s recorders are compared. Both systems work well, with the possibility of noise from a hard drive eliminated thank’s the the Nano using flash memory. Longer battery life is also available, although maximum recording times are clearly shorter than is possible with the larger hard drive iPods, although a 4 or 8Gb iPod Nano will still let you record for some hours depending on the amount of free space you have left after storing your music.
Using the Nano as a CD quality voice recorder will certainly prove popular for students and anyone else that wants a quality voice recorder and an iPod in the same unit! The only major downsides to the current microphones is that they are designed to match the size of 5G iPods so the look a bit mismatched, despite still working perfectly. The ExtremeMac has a built-in speaker as well(but no external power plug), and while the Belkin has an external USB power supply (to keep the unit charged over hours long recording times), its design covers the headphone socket so you won’t be able to hear what you are recording if you wanted to do it with speakers.
Nano-specific models are bound to come soon, but in the meantime, it’s great to discover that Apple have finally enabled this capability in the Nano, letting you record quality audio from the Belkin or ExtremeMac microphone, or from a separate mic as both models have a mic/line in socket! Podcast creators are likely to be very happy too.
