Google: a new start for free apps

By John Pospisil

Free is good, and free is what Google is good at (well, someone picks up the tab somewhere, sometime, but it’s not the end user). Now Google has made its free-for-now “Google Apps for Your Domain” even easier to access with the launch of a new start page.

Google Apps for Your Domain offers private-labeled email, IM and calendar accounts to organisations, so that members can share ideas and work more effectively.

These services are all unified by the start page, which is a unique, dynamic page where users can preview their inboxes and calendars, browse content and links that you choose, search the web, and further customize the page to their liking. There’s even a tailored suite of Google apps for colleges and universities.

All the services are completely hosted by Google, and are free for at least the beta period. Will Google start charging for its services? Google promises that it won’t charge organisations that come in during the beta period. What will be interesting will be whether any significant organizations take up the offer.
