World’s slimmest mobile LCD display

By John Pospisil

Every millimetre counts in the relentless pursuit of ever slimmer gadgets, with Samsung demonstrating what it claims to be the world’s slimmest LCD display.

Just 0.82 mm thick, the new screen is 0.07 mm thinner than the previous record. Samsung also announced ”i-Lens”, a protective plastic incorporated into the screen itself. Both innovations could reduce the thickness of a mobile phone by 1.4 mm to 2.4 mm.

The screen will be available in two sizes, 2.1 and 2.2 inches, with a resolution of 240 x 320 (qVGA) and a 500:1 contrast rate.

Samsung said the its research and development program has the goal of developing “truly differentiated and more reliable, ultra-thin mobile products.”

The screen is slated for mass production in the middle of next year.
