Maintaining a youthful brain
People often think that daily exercise is important in keeping their bodies young and healthy; what most fail to recognize is that their brain is similar in the fact that it must be exercised to maintain youthfulness.
As you age, mental abilities are impaired due to the loss of, or damage to the neurons in your brain; Exercising your brain is critical in the survival of neurons.
Aside from physical exercise, which also plays a role in stimulating brain function and regeneration, methods for keeping the brain youthful include: solving puzzles and brainteasers, learning new things, reducing your stress levels (if possible), keeping a healthy diet such as eating fruits and vegetables, and even thinking young. Many sources suggest not to think that you are old; you will actually start to become what you think you are. Try not to spend too much time alone. Social interaction is the most recently discovered brain function that plays a vital role in maximizing the effectiveness of all your mental skills; this is, in fact, a growing problem in today’s youth.
Here are a few places you can go on the web for researching and achieving a set “plan of action” for brain stimulation:
Braingle – Over 10,000 brain teasers, riddles, logic problems, and puzzles. They also include articles on “mental aerobics”, and tests on short term memory.
Puzzles – Offering a variety of puzzles including classics and original content, Illusions, and various other amusements.
If your looking for a real challenge, I would suggest trying some word math. Word math is like regular math, except your adding letters that represent numbers. It sounds easy, but it’s not.
