Traveling to space with Charles Simonyi

By George Gardner

Space Adventures is the only company in the world that offers commercial orbital spaceflight. One of their most recent clients, Charles Simonyi, who will be the fifth private space explorer in the world, is set to launch on March 9, 2007. Charles has set up his own website, Charlesinspace.com, in which he plans to document every detail of his experiences.

Charles’ site is brilliant, and one the first of it’s kind. He currently has 3 months worth of images with blogs on everything he has experienced, to date. His experiences with different simulators, images of various testing chambers, and even embarrassing details about certain toilet components can be found here.

One of the neatest sections on his site, “Ask Charles”, allows you to submit questions that you may have. Despite his busy training, he promises to answer as many questions as possible.

Charles challenges us to “climb into the third seat”, and just browsing his site, makes you feel like you’re the one who’s going to space. It will be exciting to watch on March 9th, Charels’ launch into space, and even more interesting to read his blogs and view his images when he gets back.

You’ll need months of training, good heath, and about 20 million dollars (not including spacewalk) for this adventure.
