Toshiba 100GB drive should fit in an iPod

By Gareth Powell

Toshiba has a new 100GB model of its 1.8-inch hard drive. You have to carefully think about that size. It is miniature. You cannot call it a thumb drive as most people’s thumbs are much longer.

Toshiba’s 1.8-inch hard drive

A drive this site and weight will easily go into an iPod. So Steve Jobs — before he gets to ‘one other thing’ which could be an iPod mobile phone although I have sworn off mentioning them as it is very boring —- will announce a 100GB iPod.

Apple Computer strenuously declines to comment on what it calls rumor and speculation. It prefers to create its own rumor and speculation and it is frequently wrong. As in iPods on a plane. Apple announced it and the airlines booed.

Still it requires no forecasting skill on my part to suggests we will have a 100GB iPod. Since September we have had a 80GB version so it is not a major step forward.

According to IDC, Toshiba has shipped 40 million 1.8-inch drives since they were launched in 2000.
