iPhone rumors get out of hand

December 11, 2006

If it is launched, Apple’s “iPhone” should be the perfect union between a media player and a cell phone. After all, Apple has demonstrated time after time that it knows how to make cool, beautiful things that work.

The only problem is, that up until now, Apple has not actually announced the iPhone. In fact, we don’t even know whether this iPod/cell phone hybrid will be called “iPhone” – even though that is the obvious name.

Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg, recently lashed out at analysts and journalists speaking about the iPod, pointing out that most of what is being said is pure speculation and fantasy:

“First, As with the introduction of the Nano, it’s possible for rumors to be totally right while at the same time, totally wrong. Second, as usual, those who know don’t speak and those who speak don’t know. Ignore most of what’s being said as pure speculation and fantasy.”

Last week CIBC World Markets analyst Ittai Kidron suggested that the iPhone might be delayed until late first quarter 2007 to early second quarter 2007.

Gatenberg found it quite comical that journalists were calling him and asking him whether iPhone delays were affecting Apple’s share price. “Is it possible to call a product that hasn’t been acknowledged much less shipped delayed,” he wrote.

However, Gatenberg did acknowledge that he expected something pretty big to come from Apple in January.

If you’ve been reading TECH.BLORGE.com you’ll know that we’re betting that iPhone will be Apple’s “next big thing”. There’s enough circumstantial evidence out there to indicate that it’s not a case of whether the iPhone will be released, but when.

While we agree that the rumors are starting to get out of hand, we’re still predicting that the iPhone will be one of the big hits of 2007. As we’ve mentioned in the past, this is the case of the right company making the right product at the right time.
