Line Rider: strangely addictive Flash game consuming Internet

By George Gardner

What once started out as a small project for an illustration class, has exploded, and become one of the fastest growing Flash games on the Internet today.

Line Rider is simple; yet, strangely addictive. The whole idea is to create a world for ‘the line rider’ to sled on. Many players of this game are using screen recorders to capture their demonstrations; afterwards, adding music and posting their videos on Youtube.  Two of the most popular video examples of Line Rider are die at the slopes, and jagged peak adventure. These are extreme videos, and demonstrate what the best of the best can do.

At the start of Line Rider, you are given a screen with nothing useful on it but a pencil tool. From there, you draw lines creating hills, valleys, caverns, tunnels, loops, and anything else that might make the line rider’s journey a unique one. Lines created from left to right represent the floor, and lines from right to left represent the ceiling.

When you are finished drawing, you click play; the fun begins. The small line rider starts on the first line you drew, and starts sledding; moving downhill and interacting with every bump and obstacle you put in his path. Although it’s just a matter of time before the little guy wipes out, it certainly is fun to see him taking ramps and performing flips in mid-air. It sounds easy, but it’s actually a very difficult game to master (unless you enjoy seeing the line rider take the pavement).

The much anticipated new version is expected to arrive this month, and promises to provide an eraser, better line drawing tools, zoom levels, and a flag tool to save time when creating extremely large landscapes.

-Update- The new version has arrived in time for the holidays!

-Update- Download the new version to play on your PC!

True, and better graphics. I like the big air you can catch on the jumps.

      “True, and better graphics.”

Less is More. Plus, I think that the adding of an eraser tool takes away from the challenge of creating an entire course without erasing. It makes it too easy.

    7. Karl Siggurdson:

Yeah, but withuot erase your path ends up looking like a crap. I did like the redneck game, it was so fun. Sorry for bad english.

    8. George Gardner:

There are “hacked” versions out there that do have an eraser, not to mention other tools that will be available in the new version. I won’t mention any names, for I won’t support these “hacked” versions. As a matter of fact, one of the 2 videos I linked to was created on one of these unofficial versions.

I have to question whether or not these hacked versions are really hacked, or coming from the original creator. Quite possibly, he is releasing these “unofficial versions”, and noting that they are “hacked” and not promoting them.

I only say this becuase I believe there is something FSK is not telling us. FSK being the creator. I imagine he is under some sort of contract, or obligation to someone. Maybe DeviantArt?
