YouTube allows direct recording
By Gareth Powell
I am totally convinced YouTube is going to change the way people watch films, television and communicate by computer. The cameras are small — mine fits in my shirt pocket — and shoot at a good enough resolution to get a point across.
I think there is an optimum length for most YouTube movies and that it is probably around two minutes. But I do not know for sure and will experiment.
Now YouTube has added a new feature called Quick Capture, which allows users to record video directly to YouTube from webcams plugged into their computers. My view is this is a backward step as you are cutting out editing but, perhaps, we will gain in instant spontaneity although I doubt it.
The Quick Capture tool uses an Adobe Flash Player API to connect to the user’s webcam. So you have to grant, every time, the Flash Player permission to use the camera and microphone before using the service. Then chose the connection: DV, FireWire, or USB.
All you have to do then is Record. My view is the results mostly, will be woeful, but perhaps it could become a new instant art form.
This could make YouTube bigger than it is because it is an instant experience. So if you make a mistake, and a lot of people will, it appears warts and all. Will watch with great interest.

I think the idea is inviting the wrong content, rather than challenging it. It just makes it that much easier for kids to “cheeze” in front of the camera, and takes out the art of editing and composing an interesting video. Good for Youtube? Maybe – but ultimately bad for us.
