Guess this; the 20Q defined

December 17, 2006

Assuming you’ve been in a closet (which is larger than a loaf of bread), the game, 20Q, is designed to guess what you are thinking by asking a series of questions. The game most of us are familiar with, classic 20Q, will guess an object with amazing accuracy; but how does it work?

The process is quite simple; yet, complex at the same time. The logic actually comes from you, the player. When you play the online game, all your answers are stored in a massive database, and are then linked to the object you are thinking of. Since the majority of the world answers questions in a similar way, the 20Q guesses what you are thinking of by comparing your answers to the most popular object associated with those answers; the game uses this method to choose the next question as well as deciding what to guess.

The game uses a neural-network, much similar to a human brain. No single object is ever ruled out during game play; otherwise, one wrong answer given by the user, would result in a wrong guess by the 20Q. Instead, all your answers (inputs) are stored, and then compared “on the fly” immediately before the 20Q guesses. This means that the 20Q has no idea what you are thinking of while it is asking you questions. The game is neat, but the technology is genius, and could prove to be useful in other areas.

Aside from the much familiar pocket versions of this game, 20Q.net provides other similar games like 20Q Movies, 20Q Sports, and even the oddly accurate 20Q name game which was able to guess my name correctly within 30 questions! Scary.

The online 20Q was created in 1996, and is played over 12,000 times a day. Each time the game is played, it gets smarter, and is constantly learning new things to help its accuracy. The Game was invented by Robin Burgener, which started out as a program on a floppy disk in 1988. Now the 20Q is everywhere, and continues to impress players around the globe.
