Skype worm is not a worm

By John Pospisil

The recently reported Skype “worm” is actually a trojan horse virus, and its threat is relatively low, is the latest advice from security company Websense.

Popular VoIP software, Skype, has worms

How the “worm” worked is that Skype users received a message asking them to download and run a file called sp.exe. The virus then attempted to download new versions of itself from a server and steal passwords and other personal information.

Most victims were located in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Korea.

Websense is now saying the that the user needs to actually run the downloaded code to activate the virus, and that the code does not copy itself. The virus does not exploit any security vulnerability in Skype.
