XBox 360 V2 rumors: fact or fiction?

By George Gardner

XBox 360 V2 rumors: fact or fiction?Popular tech blog, Engadget, claims to have obtained images of the XBox 360 Version 2, a.k.a. Zephyr, and while they look to be authentic, one might wander if Zephyr actually exists.

Engadget didn’t have too much to say about the upgraded 360; aside from coming with a 65nm processor, an HDMI port (for 1080p), and a larger, much anticipated 120GB hard drive.

Rumors would have it, that, this upgraded console is Microsoft’s response to the new PS3 and Wii, in a not so desperate attempt at keeping up with technology, but rather an attempt at keeping up with sales.

Microsoft refuses to comment on these Images; which makes the phrase “seeing is believing” seem not so relevant in this case.

One source, Mr. Dean T. of Mercury News, has been noted for “leaking” news about Zephyr; reporting the use of the new Xbox as an IPTV set-top-box, having instant channel change, multiple picture-in-picture, video on demand, and a built in Digital Video Recorder (DVR). He also claims these announcements are to be officially proclaimed by Microsoft themselves at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

If these rumors are true (and some believe it’s a question of ‘when’, not ‘if’), current 360 owners will surely be shooting steam while wondering if Microsoft will be doing anything to aid in the purchase of the upgraded version. Gamers are crying for a possible discount on the Zephyr, assuming they own the current 360; but most know the hard truth, saying, “users of older 360s are just out of luck.”, and, “People buy electronics knowing they’ll soon be not the newest.”

While there have not been any official reports as of yet, Engadget’s source (possibly within Microsoft) claims we’ll be seeing Version 2 “soon”.
