Google and Yahoo! get mobile
By Gareth Powell
Yahoo! and Google announced new mobile-phone ideas the day after Steve Jobs announced the iPhone. (Good timing there lads.) In truth Steve Jobs did say that both companies’ services will be available on the iPhone. They will also be on Samsung mobile phones.
Google’s announcement is that Samsung users will be able to access its search, email, and map products. This does not, in truth, stir me that much.
Yahoo!, on the other hand, has Yahoo! Go 2.0 which sounds a tad Shakespearean. ‘Yahoo, go to, Anthony. I have immortal longings in me.’
This is still in beta but it will include widgets that allow users to quickly find things they need: email, weather, sports scores, local information and maps, and photo sharing.
Yahoo! also said it has agreements to deliver its services to Nokia’s and Motorola’s handsets and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. You can possibly download it for other phones as well.
This was a singularly daft time to announce these additions even if they will be on the iPhone because Apple is, quite rightly, hogging all the glory and the furore will not die down for a week or so.
Possibly when Yahoo! Go 2.0 comes out of beta it will be a quiet news week and this new service from Yahoo! (click on this link to see more) will get the attention it deserves. Google, on the other hand, once again shows that while it is king of the hill in search engines it is not too great in other areas.
