Iomega StorCenter Pro with lots of hard drives
Iomega has announced its new StorCenter Pro NAS 150d Server which is designed as a network storage solution for small businesses and, possibly, some advanced home users.
There are two models. One of one terabyte which is based on four hot-swappable SATA II 250GB hard drives, and a 2TB model based on four hot-swappable SATA II 500GB hard drives.
(Why would an advanced home user want this much space? Video. Shoot an hour of video and stick it on your hard disk and that is 18 gigs of storage gone. And that is not at ultra-high resolution when we may be doubling those figures.)
Both can be configured in various RAID — which stood originally for Random Array of Inexpensive Disks and still does as far as many journalists are concerned — configurations.
RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring), or RAID 5 (striping plus parity) operation. With RAID 0 you get maximum performance and operating capacity; RAID 5 you get maximum data security.
Also on the StorCenter is a Gigabit Ethernet port, USB 2.0 interface, and Iomega’s Discovery Tool software. For backup from client PCs, Iomega also includes a five-client license for EMC Retrospect Express.
You are looking at around $800 for the one terabyte version, $1,500 for the two terabyte.

the R in RAID stands for Redundant. not Random.
And RAID 1 gives you the maximum security, not RAID 5. Though you sacrifice 50% of your space with RAID 1, but only 25% with RAID 5 (with 4 discs that is. it’s 1-[(N-1)/N]% lost in general)
