No rain on ‘Storm Worm’ parade

January 26, 2007

No rain on 'Storm Worm' ParadeDespite the consistent efforts of security corporations and professionals around the globe, the Troj/Dorf-Fam worm, dubbed ‘Storm Worm’, continues to infect computers worldwide.

First discovered nearly 10 days ago, the Storm Worm is still appearing in waves, each one with their own unique e-mail message: ‘First nuclear act of terrorism!’, and ’Happy World Religion Day!’ The worm is seen more recently with a soft side with subjects like: ‘Together You and I’, and ‘A Bouquet of Love.’

It’s the same old scenario: you receive an e-mail, it has an attachment, you download and execute the attachment, and then you unknowingly send hundreds, if not thousands, of instances of the same worm to more victims.

It’s a never ending effort, and it will continue to be a threat until users’ get wise to opening attachments on their computers. Sadly, you can’t always rely on your Anti-Virus software to detect and prevent an infection on your own machine.

“Malware writers know they have limited time before an AV signature or heuristic will be created to block any mass-distributed malware, so they break the outbreak into thousands of variants and distribute in smaller numbers of instances to maximize infection,” said Haggai Carmon, Commtouch vice president of products, in a statement.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos security gives us the most intellectual approach (yet not so obvious to some), “People must learn to think before they click. It may be tempting to open an attachment which you think is a greeting card or a message from a loved one, but love can get you into trouble sometimes. The best defense is common sense.”
