LineRider improved: download version available
By Gareth Powell
George Gardner, my fellow columnist, ruined my life with Line Rider. He is solely to blame. Now I have been able to download Line Rider on to my computer and my life has taken a further downward turn.
First George mentioned Line Rider and then, on December 19 last year, he banged the drum for the new version of Line Rider and I became a total addict to this simple yet subtle game. This new version was important became I run it on a Sony Vaio and I needed the added magnifying glass. (A late addition. George, who knows well of what he writes, has written a very important note which appears right at the very, very end. It is important. Search for it. Read it.)
The original version was came out in September 2006. Line Rider was created by Bostjan Cadez (aka FSK) as a project for an illustration class.
I am not certain if George Gardner knows how many lives he has ruined by publicising this game. There is no scoring, no set objectives, and no levels to complete. Just keep the little bugger on the sledge and not falling off into space. Some of the LineRider users are so skillful they are creating quite serious works of art. At least from where I am sitting.
A California-based software company inXile Entertainment has obtained the publishing rights to LineRider. The company plans to release versions of the game on both the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii in the next few month. There will be some added features but I am blessed if I can see what they could be.
Tiralmo and Blauwbaard (author of Panic) at JayIsGames suggest the toy needs a few objectives to make it more enjoyable.
1. Create a ramp to slide down without crashing.
2. Create a ramp with a jump, and a smooth landing.
3. Create a loop-de-loop.
4. Create a backwards loop-de-loop.
Plainly this is for far more expert users than I.
The latest news and frightening news is there is a downloadable version at:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/26674594/
which is only 1.6MB in size and allows you to play when you are travelling which, with me, is a lot of the time.
I have downloaded it and crashed just as many times as I did when I played the web-based version.
My mental-health therapist says I will get over it in time and that in his opinion George Gardner has much to answer for. I concur.

Thanks for the update, gareth.
As a matter of fact, the version that you link to is the old version of Linerider, Line Rider – Beta.
There has been much debate on whether or not the new version is obtainable, and as far as I know, is not freely available to download.
However, if one must have the new version on their machine, there is another way.
If I wanted to obtain the new version at http://www.official-linerider.com/ , I would probably use one of the handy extentions available for Firefox. For instance, videodownloader at http://www.videodownloader.net would do the trick. Or you could most likely use Batch Download (just do a search on firefox extensions)
The file is in SWF format and is located at http://www.official-linerider.com/images/engin2.162.swf. Heck, you may even be able to right click that link and select “Save As..” I’m not sure.
In any case, after you’ve obtained the swf file, you will not be able to open it in Flash. This is due to it being a protected Flash movie (there are ways around this), but a more simple approach would be to make an html file that would load the swf file into a browser on your PC.
To do this, I would open Notepad or a similar text editing program, and type:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>delme</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
FLASH SCRIPT GOES HERE
</BODY>
</HTML>
The flash script can be obtained at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_4150
of course, you would need to set the width in the script to 800, the height to 600, and replace all instances of myFlashMovie.swf to engin2.162.swf
Save the file as whatever.html, make sure it is in the same directory as the engin2.162.swf file, and double click it…
Your good to go.

Hey Caleb G., do you happen to live currently, or used to live in North Carolina? I’ve been looking for a guy named Caleb Gardner whom I left my drumset with about a year or two ago, and lost contact with. If so, email me: silversurfer294@hotmail.com
