Xbox 360 raises security issues with Apple’s 802.11n wireless network

By George Gardner

Xbox 360 raises security issues with Apple's 802.11n wireless networkAccording to the Apple Support forums, Apple’s new AirPort Extreme Base Station, which supports the new 802.11n standard, is not working well with Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Members in the Apple discussion group said Microsoft techies were telling them that Apple’s wireless routers were not recommended for the Xbox, and that the AirPort Extreme didn’t receive Xbox certification.

Many users have found through trial and error that disabling all security on the Apple’s base station, including passwords, seems to resolve the problem; however, using a wireless network with no security is a risky fix that many people just can’t bring themselves to do.

It has not been reported as to whether the problem lies with Microsoft or Apple; although, the PS3, PSP, and Wii users are not having any issues with Apple’s 802.11n router. Your best defense, at the moment, would be to stay away from the AirPort until Microsoft and Apple get this issue worked out.

If the Problem is found on the 360’s end, it certainly would be a laugh to see Microsoft charge $1.99 for a patch to enable compatibility with Apple’s 802.11n.
