Ring all Your Phones with One Number

March 17, 2007

Ring all Your Phones with One Number If you’re like just about everyone on the planet you might have a cell phone or two, a home phone and various other means of communication. There may not be help for the “other” but a new service has come on the market that will help alleviate the number of phones and voice mail boxes to keep track of.

GrandCentral is a new service that will consolidate two phone numbers at no charge and up to six phone numbers for a price of $15 per month. What this means is that when someone calls one number, all the phones under this service will ring.

If your home phone rings, your cell phone will ring and any other numbers you have with them ring as well.  You do not need to keep track of separate voice mail boxes either, all the messages go to the same box. In addition if you call the voice mail box from your cell phone, you don’t even need to enter your password if you call it from your cell phone (that’s probably a BAD thing if someone steals your phone).

GrandCentral calls these new phone numbers “uninumbers” meaning “one number to ring them all” (sound familiar). They also offer several other very unique features.

You can listen to an incoming message as it is being recorded to the voice mail box and will allow you to accept the call, send to voice mail, accept and record or accept and send to voice mail. If you are listening to the message, you can press “*” to accept the call immediately, the message will not be recorded.

The “Switch Lines” feature will switch a current call to another phone. For example if you are talking on your home phone, you can switch the call at any time to another phone by pressing “*” which will re-ring all of the phones, all you need to do is pick up another phone. This process is transparent to the person on the other end; as far as they are concerned the call has not been interrupted.

There are many other unique features this service offers so I implore you to read more about them. Remember, the first two lines are completely free (though some services may be limited) but it certainly couldn’t hurt to try it out, you can always upgrade your account at any time.

One phone to rule them all, one phone to find them, one phone to ring them all and in the darkness, call them. (adapted from Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien)
