Microsoft unveils Deepfish, a new approach to mobile web browsing

By Ruben Francia

Microsoft unveils Deepfish, a new approach to mobile web browsingMircosoft unveiled a new mobile browsing technology called Deepfish, a downloadable app for Windows smart phone users, aims to preserve “the rich layout and full form of documents on mobile devices while providing novel ways of effectively navigating that content on small screens.”

The company claims that this browsing technology would make surfing on the mobile devices as convenient and feature-rich as browsing on a PC, as it will capture the full layout of the page and deliver it to the mobile device similar to that on the desktop.

Dr. Gary William Flake, a Microsoft Technical Fellow and the founder and director of Microsoft Live Labs said, “Mobile browsing today is often less intuitive, the pages don’t look like what you have come to expect on the desktop, and it takes a long time for a page to load. Deepfish aims to solve that problem.”

Deepfish worked like an array of photo thumbnails. You have to zoom in and zoom out to view a section in a more detail and to view the original version of the page, respectively. You can do this with a magnify box controlled by your phone’s directional pad or pointer.

Flake added, “At this time, Deepfish is currently a prototype technology, and we are not announcing any specific plans for making the product more widely available. The goal of Live Labs is to improve and accelerate the evolution of Microsoft’s Internet products and services through applied research, and providing these early prototypes for public testing and feedback is an important part of that ongoing pursuit.”

Deepfish is currently in private beta. Microsoft is limiting the amount of downloads to a “first come, first served” basis, which has now sadly been reach. If you want to see what it’s all about though, visit the site for a quick demo on Deepfish.

The company is not saying when a final version of DeepFish will be released.
