iPod proves itself in Iraq, saves soldier’s life

By John Pospisil

iPod proves itself in Iraq, saves soldier's life A US solider stationed in Iraq owes his well being, if not his life, to a 20GB HP-branded iPod sitting in his jacket pocket, according to an amazing account on flickr.

Kevin Garrad of the 3rd Infantry Division was on a street patrol in Iraq and as he turned a corner found himself facing an insurgent armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. Both men opened fire within a few feet of each other.

Garrad was hit in the chest by a bullet, but the impact of the bullet was absorbed by the iPod, which slowed the bullet down enough to ensure that it did not penetrate his body armor.

Kevin suffered no injury; the insurgent died.

It just goes to show that the world’s greatest gadget is truly a versatile instrument.

As a side note, HP-branded iPods were sold from January 2004 to July 2005, as part of a deal between Apple and HP. HP-branded iPods eventually made up 5% of iPod sales, but HP stoppped selling iPods because it was not happy with the terms and conditions imposed by Apple.

      But untrue. See http://havanalion.com/2007/04/08/ipod-tells-soldier-he-was-shot-the-real-story

The iPod might have slowed the bullet down but it certainly didn’t stop it. His body armor stopped it, in fact, he didn’t even know he was shot until he found his broken mangled iPod (poor thing…), http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/09/hp-ipod-not-as-heroic-as-previously-believed/

However, it does make for good press, maybe Apple should send him a new iPod, free of charge…
