Google set to offer video conferencing

By John Pospisil

Google has acquired video conferencing software from Swedish start up Marratech. It’s not clear how the new acquisition will be integrated with Google’s existing offering, though there is speculation that it will be added to Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

“As a company, we thrive on casual interactions and spontaneous collaboration. So we’re excited about acquiring Marratech’s video conferencing software, which will enable from-the-desktop participation for Googlers in videoconference meetings wherever there’s an Internet connection,” the company wrote on its official blog.

Marratech’s video conferencing solution includes video, text chat, VoIP and a whiteboard. Marratech currently charges its customers a monthly subscription, and it’s not yet clear whether Google will offer its version of the video conferencing service free of charge.

Google will work with Marratech’s existing engineers and support staff, who will continue to be based in Sweden.

“We look forward to learning from the extraordinary ingenuity of Marratech’s engineers as they focus on desktop conferencing research and development in Sweden, where they will continue to be located,” Google said.

Marratech will continue to serve and support its existing customer base and reseller network.

Recently Google CEO Eric Schmidt announced that the company would be adding a presentation package to its Docs & Spreadsheets offering.
