Photobucket and MySpace agree to work together
By John Pospisil
MySpace users can again post Photobucket videos and slideshows on their profiles, with the head of Photobucket, Alex Welsh, promising to respect MySpace’s terms of service in the future.
“Following discussions with MySpace, we’re pleased to announce that all Photobucket videos and remixes are enabled once more on MySpace with immediate effect,” said Welsh on the company’s official blog.
“Both our companies are committed to putting our users first.”
Earlier this month MySpace suddenly blocked Photobucket video and slideshows that had been posted on its users’ profiles.
MySpace said it blocked Photobucket content because of the appearance of advertising in slideshows, which is a violation of the MySpace terms of service (TOS).
At the time, Photobucket said that it had not been contacted beforehand by MySpace. MySpace on the other hand maintained that it had spoken to the Photobucket, but that the company refused to accept its terms.
“We had no choice but to disable their service,” said MySpace, in a statement.
But both companies have put this in the past.
“Moving forward, we’ve established open lines of communication and procedures with MySpace to prevent a sudden block of Photobucket content in the future,” said Welsh.
“We want our users to be able to share their content and understand it must be within the framework of MySpace’s Terms of Service for it to appear on the site.”
The fundamental issue at the heart of this conflict is that MySpace does not want advertising appearing on its site that it’s not getting paid for.
This is hardly surprising, since advertising is an important revenue stream for MySpace, and one that it clearly doesn’t want compromised by free riders like Photobucket.
