Google puts a shrimp on the barbie with Aussie blog
By John Pospisil
Google has launched an Australian blog; the company’s first English-language country-specific blog.
A Google spokesperson, Rob Shilkin, told TECH.BLORGE.com that the new blog was launched because the Australian market is important to Google.
“Google Australia is a regional hub and we’re investing very significantly here. Australia is a country where open, frank dialogue is part and parcel of the culture and so we think it’s a great place for a blog,” said Shilkin.
“We’re keen to speak directly with our Australian users, customers, partners and potential recruits about local news and launches, and about life at Google Australia. We are hoping to receive Australian feedback which is extremely important to us.”
Australian Google staff already posting to the new blog. Software engineer Noel Gordon, in an April 30 post, promised that the new blog would answer the questions we’ve all been wondering about:
Who works here? What do we do all day? Can we bring snakes to the office? Do we use Pigeon Rank or Kookaburra Rank?
So Noel, what do you do all day? No that you’ve offered to fill us in, we’re expecting to see daily posts!
I shouldn’t be so flippant. Noel is the co-creator of Google Maps. In fact, Google Maps started in Australia.
Seriously, it’s good to see Google launch an Australian blog. The US-based Google blog is a really useful source of information, and hopefully the Australian version will follow in the same tradition.
Google also announced that Australians can now further personalise their own www.google.com.au page with “fun, dynamic” themes. Google is asking Australian users to submit ideas for a unique Aussie-specific themes.
