By John Pospisil

AMD tries to rain on Intel's Santa Rosa parade Just days before the official launch of Intel’s new Centrino platform, Santa Rosa, AMD has launched its own mobile platform with the help of its technology partners, graphics chip maker Nvidia and wireless chip maker Broadcom.

AMD’s new mobile platform is based around AMD’s Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology, along with chipsets from AMD and NVIDIA, and wireless networking solutions from Broadcom .

AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology is based on AMD’s 65nm Silicon-on-Insulator technology, which is said to increase transistor performance, scalability and power efficiency.

According to AMD, its new mobile platform delivers a superior Windows Vista experience for end-users, and offers 3D graphics, wireless, battery life, and performance advantages.

Notebook PCs based on the new AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology will be available later this quarter from leading computer makers.

The new mobile platform has been developed as part of AMD’s “Better by Design” program, which AMD describes as an open platform strategy to drive collaboration and competition among the leading technology companies around the world.

“Our next generation mobile processors, combined with superior graphics and wireless technologies demonstrate our commitment to an open platform strategy, which enables our OEM customers to design the ultimate mobile platforms,” said Chris Cloran, vice president, AMD Mobile Division.

“PC users today expect more from their computers and the Better by Design program features the superior technologies and leading-edge performance buyers seek to meet the demands of their ever-expanding digital lifestyle.”
