Porn domain goes for hefty $9.5 million, but sex still more expensive

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Porn.com domain goes for hefty $9.5 million The Porn.com domain name has been sold for an amazing $9.5 million to MXN, an Internet media and investment firm affiliated with DOWNLOADPASS.com.

According to Moniker, the company that brokered the deal, the sale is the largest all-cash domain transaction in history.

“The sale of Porn.com further reinforces the growing trend of businesses that place a high strategic value on generic domains related to their industry,” said Monte Cahn co-founder and chief executive officer of Moniker.com.

“Porn.com will prove to be a valuable asset for MXN Ltd. because of its significant number of daily visitors, established type-in traffic in addition to being the top domain in the adult industry.”

Considering that sex and porn sell, it’s no surprise that the domain fetched such a high price but not the highest. The highest amount ever paid for a domain name was $12 million for Sex.com.

The third highest amount was $7.5 million for Business.com, so it seems that porn sells but business doesn’t? Still I wound’t mind a cool $7.5 million for simply owning a domain name.

In the interest of writing this article I checked Porn.com against McAfee Site Advisor, it already has a red flag, I have not checked the site so I can’t tell you what’s there. Do I want to know, not really, it probably won’t live up to its name.

This also goes to show that people like simple URLs (the website address…) so they don’t have to type long names, we’ve all been there at one point so I won’t provide an example. Either never clear your browser cache, remember the URL or bookmark it.

Porn.com, sex.com and so it goes. Whatever, I have no intention of visiting either one.

It seems Moniker is at the forefront of a lot of high profile deals lately, just closing the $9.5 million deal for porn.com. It represents the largest all cash transaction in domain history.
