Firefox 1.5, it’s not you, it’s Mozilla

By George Gardner

Firefox 1.5, it's not you, it's Mozilla After 19 months of raising Firefox 1.5, Mozilla has decided to release the late great browser into the world. Exactly what, in particular, does this mean for you, the reader? There is a 1 in 10 chance that your computer will be vulnerable to an Internet threat if any new security issues arise.

Firefox 1.5 is currently integrated with all the latest security bells and whistles, but, in the near future, will not receive any new updates – including security updates.

Mozilla is recommending all Firefox 1.5 users (10% of those who visit this site) to upgrade to Firefox 2 - unless you’re from the University of Missouri and have no need for security.

Within 24 hours, Firefox 1.5 users will be prompted via an auto-update alert to download an update which will give users easy access to a migration to Firefox 2, the latest stable and secure version of the most* popular browser.

*- Allow me to explain; while checking the statistics for this site – thus explaining the 10% or 1 in 10 - I observed an interesting statistic. Nearly 60% of all users to TECH.BLORGE.com are using Firefox, leaving a pathetic 29% for all versions of Internet Explorer.

“The security of our users is one of Mozilla’s highest priorities,” said Basil Hashem, Mozilla’s senior director, product management. “We’re consumer focused and have aggressive development and life cycle policies. We believe it’s necessary to ensure people have the safest, fastest, and best possible online experience.”

Mozilla’s ‘update policy’ announces that users will receive a strict 6 months to upgrade after the release of a new browser.

So for you 10% who haven’t found the time, and for you stubborn 29% who are holding on to ATM, go to http://www.getfirefox.com to obtain the freshest version.

Actually, the 24 hours window you mention is for beta testers only. Firefox 2.0.0.4 will be offered to Firefox 1.5.0.12 users in about 2 weeks.
