NBC to widgetize popular TV content for Web
By George Gardner
NBC Universal will be distributing widgetized versions of its television shows like “Dateline,” “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” “Meet the Press” and “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” as well as content from NBC Sports. This move will allow webmasters to add NBC’s content without the fear of violating copyrights.
Users can customize NBC’s widgets and post them anywhere on their blogs, personal web pages, or social networking profiles.
“We want to create a fun, shared experience for our users and understand their needs as they interact with our content beyond our online properties.” said Sab Kanaujia, Vice President, Digital Product Strategy & Development, NBC Universal.
NBC’s widgets will also include content from DotComedy.com, iVillage.com, and plans to add more content in the future along with increased personalization options and enhanced features.
It’s assumed that these widgets will also contain advertisements; although, no mention was made at the time of announcement. Here’s an idea: put some advertisements in NBC shows and create legitimate, legal torrents.
NBC’s widget content syndication and distribution platform will be brought to you by Clearspring Technologies.
“We are delighted to have been chosen to deliver this start-to-finish solution for NBC Universal,” said Chris Marentis, CEO of Clearspring. “By using our premium hyper-syndication platform, fans of NBCU’s programming can now easily personalize their favorite Web sites with NBCU content. This allows NBCU to lead the shift to the new distributed web and deliver their premium content whenever and wherever consumers chose to enjoy it.”
This is the first move by NBC in promise of its social network launching later this month. NBC’s social network will allow fans to create personalized profiles, hold video and photo galleries, create blogs, and join message boards to ‘chat up’ all things NBC.
