Marks & Spencer iPod suit – the ultimate in geek decadence

By John Pospisil

Marks & Spencer iPod suit - the ultimate in geek decadence It’s what every iPod-loving high-tech geek executive has been crying out for — an iPod suit! Venerable UK clothing retailer, Marks & Spencer, has announced that it will start stocking the Bagir ”iPod” suit (pictured).

The £149 (US$295) Bagir suit, a black two-button pinstripe, allows the wearer to control their iPod by simply touching the lapel.

How it works is that the Bagir suit jacket integrates ElekTex smart fabric touchpad technology, which transforms the lapel into a 5-button electronic control panel.

The touchpad allows the person wearing the suit to control their iPod on/off, play, pause, track changes, and volume functions. The iPod is tucked away in an interior pocket, which also has a connector sewn into it.

“Marks & Spencer and the iPod are both part of everyday life in Britain. The suit for iPod is an evolution of this, by combining technology and clothing while still maintaining the integrity of both,” said Mustafa Dhar, Marks & Spencer suit buyer.

“In the future, this kind of product is going to be even more important as we accommodate more technology in our lives.”

According to Bagir, the incorporation of the iPod control panel into the lapel, hasn’t compromised the look and style of the suit.

“What appealed to us about ElekTex is the ability to seamlessly incorporate this lightweight fabric into apparel without impacting the style and clean lines of the clothing that we produce,” said Moshe Gadot, Bagir’s director of global development and marketing.

I might be missing something, but isn’t it almost as easy to reach into your pocket and adjust your iPod using its own controls, rather than to fiddle around with your lapel?

I’m also assuming that most people wear more than one suit to work, so you’d still need to adjust your iPod the old fashioned way on the “other” days.

Still, there’s bound to be some über-cool, über-decadent, über-geeks who just love the idea of an iPod suit.
