HD DVD scores in the format war

By George Gardner

HD DVD scores in the format war The North American HD DVD Promotional Group (NAHDPG) was more than delighted to announced that the HD DVD format is leading the market with 60% of all HD players sold and HD DVD movie sales reaching an all time high last month.

NAHDPG attributes the recent success of HD DVD, in part, to Toshiba dropping the price of its player from $499 to $399; this move caused HD DVD player sales to double in the month of April and double again the first week of May.

“Toshiba’s latest promotional efforts are clearly resonating with consumers and showing that price is king when it comes to hardware,” said Craig Kornblau, chairman of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group.

Last week, over 75,000 HD DVD movies were sold as HD sales hit a record with $5.2 million in consumer spending, 31% higher than the previous record for the two formats.

Kornblau added,  ”Behind the increase in sales for hardware and movies, you’re seeing fundamentally lower manufacturing costs and ease of authoring for HD DVD. That’s the type of model that can scale.”

NAHDPG noted that over 150,000 dedicated HD DVD players have been sold, holding a 4 to 1 movie attach rate over competing formats; not before adding: “the sales of dedicated consumer electronics players are vital in determining which HD format is likely to be adopted.”
