PS3 and Blu-Ray players outnumber HD-DVD 5 to 1
The PS3 may not be winning the console wars but one thing it is winning is the next gen format wars. The PS3 which is also a Blu-Ray player, in conjunction with stand alone Blu-Ray players outnumber XBOX 360 HD-DVD and stand alone HD-DVD players by a ratio of nearly 5 to 1.
Who can say why that is? I would have predicted HD-DVD to win, it is still early on and HD-DVD may eventually overtake Blu-Ray but for now Blu-Ray is the early favorite.
Why HD-DVD? The porn industry is big in the US and it adopted HD-DVD as its format of choice. Have an HDTV? Well, pair it up with an HD-DVD player, that’s what I thought would have made sense with most consumers.
Perhaps not now, not after Blu-Ray supporters started the “Blu-Ray, get the next generation DVD experience” campaign. So it seems that Blu-Ray is a next generation DVD. It’s more of a cousin to it, HD-DVD is closer to a next-generation DVD but glitzy ads will always win the hearts and minds of consumers.
In my opinion, neither format is better or worse than the other; both look excellent on 1080p HDTVs. You would be hard pressed to see a difference.
According to Digital Entertainment group there are 1.5 million Blu-Ray players in the US with 1.4 million of those being PS3s. The situation is grim on the HD-DVD side with only 300,000 units split 50/50 between XBOX 360 HD-DVD players and stand alone players. Couple that with Blockbuster’s endorsement of Blu-Ray and certainly there is no possible way Blu-Ray can lose now.
